9 ways to make your online food shop more sustainable

Let’s be real with ourselves for a moment, we are so time-strapped that going out of our way and avoiding the convenient choices isn’t always possible. Yet, we desperately need to address our overconsumption and how we choose to feed ourselves and the people we care about.

Here 9 ways to do a low impact food shop in the comfort of your own home/or while you’re at work that requires as little packaging as possible from big brands like Ocado to the small businesses supplying zero waste bulk foods.

Fresh Produce/Groceries

1. Ocado – Low Plastic Filter

Ocado has a new feature on its website where customers can browse products with low plastic. There are currently about 1017 products, but at the moment, there is no way to organise them according to type. This will come in handy if you’re a regular Ocado shopper.

2. Farmdrop – Plastic Free + No Packaging Filter

Farmdrop is an ethical grocer delivering delicious food direct from small, local producers. They deliver to most of London, Bristol and Bath from their mostly electric fleet of Vanimals. 5. Able & Cole – UK Wide Delivery

Recipe kit boxes with ethically sourced ingredients, tips and tricks. Organic British meat and poultry
. Sustainably sourced fresh fish that’s MCS certified.
Organic dairy from Berkeley Farm’s Organic Non-homogenised milk, as well as fantastic dairy alternatives
. Fairtrade and organic kitchen cupboard essentials

6. Oddbox
Oddbox is London’s only social enterprise tackling food waste by delivering wonky fruit and veg boxes straight to the doors of homes and offices. They donate 10% to local charities like City Harvest and People’s Fridge to fight food poverty with food waste. Working directly with local growers, they offer them an alternative to the strict supermarket requirements and take the totally edible produce, which has been rejected because they’re too small, too big, slightly misshapen, not the ‘perfect’ colour or surplus to requirements at a price deemed fair by them. Using only recyclable boxes and biodegradable plastics to make sure every possible aspect of our business is helping the planet.
